Buy Marriott Points for as low as 3.75 cents per point (11 Feb – 31 Mar 2025)

With over 30 properties in Malaysia and growing, Marriott is arguably the most favoured hotel program among our Malaysian readers. Many hold Platinum Elite status and above, making it a popular choice for hotel enjoyers.

In our post on Ultimate Guide to Hotel Programs, we highlighted that during promotions, the fair market price to buy Marriott Points is around USD 0.87 cents / RM 3.89 cents per point.

This current promotion lets you buy points at a slightly lower rate — USD 0.86 cents / RM 3.84 cents per point when purchasing at least 20,000 points. This is a tiered promotion, if you buy less than 20,000 points, the cost per point will be higher.

What makes this even sweeter? If you have the CIMB Travel World Elite, which earns 1.0 Marriott points per ringgit (PPR) on overseas spending, after factoring in the FCY cost of 1.25%, you can effectively reduce your Marriott Points purchase cost to RM 3.75 cents per point (CPP).

Of course, buying Marriott Points at RM 3.75 cents per point (CPP) only makes sense if you can redeem them for better value than the direct booking price.

Here’s a sample price comparison, showing the cost of booking with points (at RM 3.75 cents per point CPP) versus the direct booking price. Since rooms booked with points offer flexibility (allowing modifications or cancellations), we’ve compared them against the standard flexible rate, not the prepaid rate.

Keep in mind that Marriott uses dynamic pricing, so the points requirements below reflect the lowest “off-peak” rates.

As an illustration, here’s the price comparison for a one-night stay at Moxy Putrajaya on March 1, 2025, using points vs. direct booking.

  • Redeeming with points: 6,000 Marriott Points, equivalent to RM 225 (RM 0.0375 x 6000).
  • Paying for direct booking: RM 369.

This means booking with points saves you 39% compared to paying the full price.

But if you have Club Marriott Malaysia membership or access to government or corporate rates, be sure to factor them in when comparing prices.

Get Even More Value with Marriott 5th Night Free Option

For every 5 consecutive nights redeemed using Marriott Points, you’ll receive one night free, with the lowest point-value night automatically discounted. This further reduces your average nightly cost, great for times when you just want to have a resort staycation such as the Mulu Marriott Resort.

Do stays booked with Marriott Points earn Elite Night Credits (ENCs)?

Yes. If you redeem a stay using Marriott Points, you’ll earn Elite Night Credits for the room you’re staying in— but not for any extra rooms you book for your kids or other guests.

And please note that redemption bookings won’t count towards the ongoing bonus Elite Night Credit campaign running from 11 February to 28 April. So, if you’re planning to buy Marriott Points, it’s best to use them only after April 28.

Convert Marriott Points to Seafood Miles

You can convert Marriott Points to 39 major airlines at a 3:1 ratio, with a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 points transferred.

With this promotion, if you buy Marriott Points at 3.75 cents per point, the cost per mile (CPM) comes to 9 cents after factoring in the 5000 miles bonus. While this is on the higher side, it can still be worthwhile for high-value redemptions, such as Alaska Miles for Starlux flights, or when the redemption cost works out to be lower than the price of a revenue ticket.

Which credit card should you use to buy Marriott Points ?

Marriott Point purchases are processed by our partner Points.com in USD, making them eligible for overseas spend. We recommend using the CIMB Travel World Elite for its relatively low foreign currency (FCY) fees and ability to earn Marriott Points, effectively reducing the Marriott Points cost to RM 3.75 cents per point. However, you can also use any of the overseas spend cards listed below.
