Some might wonder. Why is Malaysia’s Platinum Charge Card issued by Maybank? In most other markets, the Platinum Charge Card is issued directly by Amex rather than a bank.

That’s because Maybank acquired the American Express Malaysia card business in 2006. Unlike in Singapore where UOB and DBS still offer Amex credit cards, Maybank is the sole issuer of Amex cards in Malaysia because they own the AMEX business here.

Interestingly, Maybank offers 3 variants of the Charge cards: Amex, Gold, and Platinum. There’s also 8 other Amex Credit card offerings.

KF Amex Platinum and Platinum Charge: The best picks for AMEX

In our opinion, there are now only 2 worthwhile travel cards among the AMEX stack: The Platinum Charge Card and the KrisFlyer Amex Platinum Credit Card. Okay, maybe the Maybank 2 Cards Reserve is decent too.

But in this post, we’ll focus on the Platinum Charge Card.

The Platinum Charge Card is one of BolehMiles’ Best Miles Cards in Malaysia for 2026, and arguably one of the most important cards in the Malaysian miles game today.

You either pay the RM3,250 Platinum Charge annual fee as the price of entry for simplicity to earn good MPR without constantly optimizing for local spend, or you skip it and optimize using other cards to maximize returns.

After years of devaluations and nerfs across the Malaysian market, the Platinum Charge Card has held up surprisingly well, though not entirely unscathed. It remains one of the go-to cards for local spending among many seasoned mileschasers.

Who is this card for?

As ballpark, we recommend the Platinum Charge Card if you expect to spend at least

  • RM50,000 in the first year with the welcome bonus (and subsequent years with renewal bonus, if any)
  • RM100,000 from the second year onwards, when you not receiving any bonus.

To see how we arrive at these figures, check out our new BolehMiles Worth It Calculator® below. You can also input your own numbers to see if this card is right for you.

Another reason to get this card is the generous lounge access. Besides the unlimited lounge access for yourself, you can give the complimentary Priority Pass membership to one supplementary cardholder.

How Does This Card Stack Up with its Peers ?

Local Spend

One of the most common questions we get is: “Is there a card I can use for almost everything?” If you’re looking for an all-rounder for local everyday spending, this is it.

Unlike the overseas spending category, the Platinum Charge Card has very few peers. Here’s how it compares against the other cards for local general spending:

^ Low MPR, but helps to work towards 1-for-1 business class. 0.08 MPR for utilities, petrol, education, EzyPay and insurance transactions.

For local, everyday ringgit spend, nothing else comes close to 0.71MPR, except the Amex Krisflyer Platinum.

If you can’t get the Platinum Charge, the Amex Krisflyer Platinum is a decent alternative at 0.5 MPR for online spend and 0.4 MPR for offline spend.

Overseas Spend

We don’t recommend using this card for overseas spending. There are plenty of other cards with higher MPR and lower CPM. Here’s how the card stack up against the specialized overseas spending cards:

That said, if you prefer the simplicity of using one card for everything, using it overseas at an effective cost of around 2.25% FCY and 3.17 CPM isn’t too painful. It’s just not the ideal option.

The Welcome/Renewal Bonus

The current 2026 welcome offer until 31 December 2026: Spend RM20,000 within 90 days and pay the RM3250 annual fee to receive 300,000 MR points, equivalent to ~ 42,857 miles.

Factoring in the base 0.71 MPR on that RM20,000 spend, your first RM20,000 effectively earns 2.86 MPR.

By right, the welcome bonus is available only in your first year. However, based on data points from BolehMiles community members, cardholders who pay the full RM3,250 annual fee on renewal may also receive 300,000 MR points.

Frequent Flyer Program Options

Accumulating miles is just the first part of the game; the real difficulty comes in how you redeem them. Finding award availability for your desired date can be tricky, which is why flexibility matters.

You can transfer MR points to the 5 FFPs. AirAsia Rewards and Batik Air are also available, but we don’t think they’re worth considering. Etihad Guest and Emirates Skywards used to be transfer partners too, but both have since been discontinued.

Delta Skymiles and Royal Orchid Plus (both seafood miles) are actually usable, but only for the more advanced users.

Therefore, the core options are effectively 3 FFPs: Enrich (carbs), and Krisflyer Miles and Asia Miles (Meat).

This is on par with UOB cards. If maximum flexibility is what you are going for, CIMB cards still wins.

Hotel Points Options

The card is also a good way to earn Hilton Honors points at 1.52 points per RM1.

If we value one Hilton point at ~0.4 US cents (around 1.62 ringgit sen), that’s roughly a ~2.5% value-back. Of course, the actual value may be higher or lower depending on your redemption.

For Marriott Points at 0.45 PPR: The earn rate is poor. If you are a Marriott fan, we recommend using CIMB cards instead.

Lounge Access

Besides having one of the highest MPRs for local spending, the Platinum Charge Card also gives the best lounge access of any card in Malaysia.

Lounge Access Remarks
The Centurion® lounges Principal and Supplementary members and 1 guests each. All guests must travel in the same flight. Access only within 5 hours of your scheduled departure time.

Sky Lounge (Subang Airport) 12 Principal Only. Access to Sky Lounge at Subang Airport.

Centurion Lounges are Amex’s flagship airport lounges and they are usually more atas than the typical Priority Pass lounges, with premium made-to-order food and beverages.

The Centurion lounge at Haneda, for example, features ramen, beef sliders, and a sushi bar.

That said, the lounges have become increasingly crowded in recent years. Amex has since tightened access by reducing complimentary guests from 2 to 1and limiting entry to within 5 hours of departure.

Besides the Centurion Lounge, the Platinum Charge Card also comes with unlimited lounge access via Priority Pass, a benefit offered by only a handful of premium cards in the market:

Card Number of access Lounge Type
Maybank Platinum Charge Maybank Platinum Charge Priority Pass
UOB Visa Infinite Metal UOB VI Metal DragonPass
SCB Beyond Visa Infinite Private SCB Beyond VI Private Priority Pass

The Platinum Charge also gives you access to Plaza Premium First (PPF) and Travel Club Lounge at KLIA T1, both of which are generally less crowded than the main Plaza Premium Lounge at KLIA Terminal 1. You can read our complete guide to KLIA Terminal 1 lounges here.

Note that however, you can only access the PPF in KLIA T1. You cannot use this card to access PPFs overseas, such as those in Hong Kong and Cambodia.

PPF KLIA T1

Fine Hotels & Resorts + Hotel

The other key perk of the Platinum Charge is the access to  Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR), which comes with these benefits:

1Certain room categories are not eligible for upgrade.
2Eligible charges vary by property.

The real gem here is the USD100 hotel credit, which can be used for eligible hotel charges such as dining, drinks, and spa treatments, but not the cost of the room.

Since FHR has no minimum stay requirement, you can book just one night to maximize return.

You might be thinking. “Wait..If I find a room that costs USD100 and still receive a USD100 hotel credit. Isn’t that a loophole?”

It is a good deal indeed, but remember, the actual value of the credit is subjective. Hotel restaurants and spas can be more expensive than options nearby the hotel.

Source: MaxFHR.com

Also, FHR room rates are flex rates and can be much higher than prepaid rates. So don’t expect the discounted prices you might find on OTAs.

Another advantage of FHR bookings: They are eligible for hotel loyalty benefits. You can earn points and receive elite night credits.

Note that the selection of FHR hotels is not many, and they are generally on the higher end of the luxury segment. In Kuala Lumpur, there are currently 10 hotels bookable through FHR, with Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur being the latest addition.

Hotel Elite Status

There isn’t much information on this, but both you and your supplementary cardholder are eligible for complimentary elite status with the following hotel loyalty programs. Just drop an email to the concierge to ask about it: amexplatinum@holidaytours.com.my

  • Hilton Gold
  • Marriott Gold
  • Radisson Rewards Premium

Hilton Gold is valuable for its complimentary breakfast, so it’s great option especially for rooms with low prepaid rates. Marriott Gold doesn’t include breakfast. Radisson has a limited footprint in Malaysia and Asia, and since it doesn’t offer breakfast either, its value is fairly limited.

For a deeper dive on what hotel status actually gets you, see our hotel elite status guide.

Other Perks

Platinum Concierge: A 24-hour concierge for reservations, hard-to-get tickets, gifting, and travel planning. Nice to have if you’ll actually use it.

International Airlines Programme + KLIA Limo: Book First or Business international tickets through the Platinum Travel Service and you get a complimentary one-way limo to KLIA from anywhere in the Klang Valley These are limited to Etihad Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Japan Airlines.

Golf Privileges: Local and international golf course access, subject to a RM5,000 minimum spend in the previous month’s statement.

Travel Insurance: Travel Personal Accident coverage up to RM2,000,000. The policy has significant coverage gaps and isn’t one we’d recommend relying on. You can read more on our credit card travel insurance review.

Is the annual fee worth it?

Value is subjective and depends heavily on your spending habits and how often you make use of the card’s perks.

We’ve pre-filled the calculator below with reasonable assumptions, but feel free to adjust the values based on your own usage to see whether the Platinum Charge Card is worth it for you.

Worth It (Boleh)!

As a rule of thumb, if you’re receiving the annual bonus, spending at least RM50,000 a year should get you your money’s worth plus around 50% more, assuming you make good use of the lounges and other perks.

Without the renewal bonus from the second year onwards, you’ll need around RM100,000 of annual spend to get roughly 40% more value.

These are based on our own assumptions, so feel free to adjust them based on your own usage.

FAQ

How to waive the annual fee?

There is no unconditional waiver for the RM3,250 annual fee, and Maybank does not publish any official renewal offers for this card.

That said, BolehMiles community members have reported receiving a discretionary, non-guaranteed 300,000 MR points for renewal. To learn more about it, search the BolehMiles Telegram group.

Is this card made of metal?

Yes. If you “accidentally” drop it on the restaurant table, it’ll make a metallic clink. Just a little bit. But honestly, who carries physical cards these days? Apple Pay and Google Pay are the new cool.

Is the credit limit unlimited?

No. The spending limit is high but dynamic, determined based on factors such as your repayment history, spending patterns, spending amount, and overall profile with Maybank.

Otherwise, everyone could buy a yacht and disappear like Uncle Low.

Is this the Centurion Card?

No, this isn’t the Black / Centurion Card. It’s a mass-affluent card and anyone can apply for it. If you’re looking for a card to impress that lady, this isn’t the card.

Can I use FD pledge to get this card?

No. A Charge Card is different from a credit card. Since it has a dynamic spending limit instead of a fixed credit limit, you can’t get it with fixed deposit pledge.

As an alternative, you can get the Amex KrisFlyer Platinum with FD pledge.

Conclusion

At RM3,250 a year, the Platinum Charge Card is not for everyone. But experienced miles chasers know this: it opens the door to an easier miles game and a more comfortable way to travel. Or, as some would call it, lifestyle inflation.

Here’s hoping the Maybank Platinum Charge Card benefits continue to hold up for years to come. Until then, it’s still one of the strongest miles cards in Malaysia.

That’s all for this post. Be sure to subscribe to the BolehMiles Telegram to stay updated on the latest Malaysian miles stuff. See you on the next one.

  1. Another good write up article including the not so well known info such as complimentary one-way limo to KLIA for ticket booking. Appreciate if you can include FCY rate comparison used by Amex Platinum against Maybank MU VI or KrisFlyer Amex Platinum Credit Card or other popular high MPR earning bank card (UOB, CIMB, etc)
