Hotel Programs: Ultimate Guide to Hotel Points and Elite Status

Hotel Programs — Stay More, Earn More, and Get Higher Status. But Is It Worth It?

Hotel Elite membership can elevate your travel experience, but the cost of achieving them through traditional means can outweighs the benefits.

Overview

The miles and points game is built on three pillars: credit cardsair miles programs, and hotel loyalty programs. So far, we’ve focused on credit cards and air miles programs on the site.

Now, it’s time to dive into hotel programs!

Are they worth your loyalty, or should you keep your options open by sticking with online travel agencies (OTA) like Trip.com and Agoda?

In this post, we’ll give an overview of different hotel programs to give you a better perspective.

The “Famous 5” hotel programs— Accor Live Limitless, Marriott BonvoyHilton Honors, IHG One Rewards, and World of Hyatt— each have their unique appeal and loyal fanbases.

Beyond the Famous 5, there’s also Shangri-La Golden Circle, Wyndham Rewards, GHA Discovery, and other hotel programs. Today, we’ll focus on the “Famous 5”.

Accor has the strongest presence in Asia Pacific and Europe but falls short in the Americas. Marriott offers a well-rounded global footprint, with North America as its stronghold.

In Malaysia, we’re lucky to have a good selection of Accor, Marriott, and Hilton hotels. Our country is great for staycations and short getaways, with relatively lower room rates compared to many other countries. More hotels are opening soon in 2025 that we can look forward to, including Park Hyatt KL at Merdeka 118 and Waldorf Astoria KL.

If you’re not traveling to the Americas, Accor is a great choice especially in Asia Pacific. Marriott, Hilton, and IHG offer strong coverage in the Americas and globally, while Hyatt is favored by luxury travelers for its exclusivity.

* Stay Earn Rate (PPR): Typical base earn rate in Points Per Ringgit when you book your stay directly on the hotel website. The rate excludes elite bonuses or promotional multipliers. The rate will be lower for budget brands like iBis.
^ Fair Market Cost (CPP): Typical cost in ringgit cents per point (CPP) during bonus campaigns. Accor points can’t be purchased directly, so we use absolute redemption value of 9.40 CPP.

Points Accessibility

The basic way to earn hotel points is by booking your stays directly with the hotels (third-party bookings usually don’t qualify for points).

You can also earn hotel points through credit card spending. In Malaysia, with CIMB TWE you can convert bonus points to Accor, Marriott, and IHG. You can also get Hilton points and Marriott points through Maybank Amex.

Another option is to buy the hotel points (except Accor) from Points.com, often on sale throughout the year. The fair market cost in the table above is basically the better-than-average price for buying points.

For World of Hyatt, we in Malaysia can only earn points through stays or purchasing them.

Points Expiry

Accor and IHG points expire every 12 months of inactivity.

Marriott, Hilton, World of Hyatt points expire every 24 months of inactivity.

Any points activity will reset the expiry clock, for all 5 programs. In other words, the expiry date of your entire stack of points will be extended by 12/24 months.

Redemption

Most hotel programs have switched to dynamic points redemption, but World of Hyatt still maintains a fixed redemption chart.

Redemption charts are what we like to see – and World of Hyatt definitely stands out with some redemption sweet spots.

Stay tuned as we dive deeper into each program’s redemption sweet spots in upcoming posts!

Elite Status Levels and Perks

Every hotel program offers a similar Elite status benefit structure.

Each Elite status level unlocks different benefits, from thoughtful gestures like welcome letters and gifts that make you feel like VIP, to practical perks such as free breakfast, room upgrade, early check-in and late check-out.

Elite Status Levels

Let’s break down the practical benefits that you get at different levels:

Silver (10 nights): Gives you a better shot (not guaranteed) at late check-out and welcome gifts.

Gold (20 to 40 nights): All Silver benefits plus room upgrades and early-check in. Only Hilton provides free breakfast at this level.

Platinum/Diamond/ Titanium (40 to 75 nights): Unlocks (almost) all the benefits including suite night coupons (Accor) and lounge access. This excludes milestone awards, which are unlocked through separate track.

Ambassador and Lifetime Elite Status (100+ nights and spend requirement): Upwards of 100 nights a year and spending truckload of money at Marriott. And for Lifetime Titanium, Diamond and Globalist at Marriott, Hilton and World of Hyatt respectively, you have maintain the elite status for many years.

Practical Benefits

Free Breakfast

Breakfast can cost a lot, especially in aspirational locations like Maldives or high end luxury hotel brands like JW Marriott. Typically, the free breakfast is for 2 pax. If the breakfast costs USD40 per pax, you are saving USD80 (RM350) every morning.

Hilton Honors offers breakfast at the Gold level, the lowest requirement across the 5 hotel programs. The rest of the programs only offer breakfast at the Platinum level at the minimum.

Early Check-in and Late Check out

Experienced travellers know that having to wait till 3PM to check in and the rush to check out as early as 11AM can be inconvenient.

Early check-ins (Hyatt, IHG, Accor) are useful when you arrive at the destination early. If you arrive at Japan in the morning after a red-eye flight, early check-in allows you recharge and rest in the hotel room instead of waiting until 3PM.

Late check-out is a standard benefit across all programs. Standouts are Marriott and World of Hyatt, offering the latest check-out (by policy) up to 4PM.

While most hotels provide either early or late check out, Accor Platinum members gets both early check-in AND late-check out for free. It is also possible for World of Hyatt Explorist members to get both, although the policy is less explicit.

Travel tip: If you have a mix of AirBnBs and hotels in a trip, time your hotel stays at the beginning and end of your trip for maximum flexibility on flights. AirBnB hosts are usually not as flexible compared to hotels for check-in and check-out times. At hotels, even if you are not granted with late check-outs, you can drop your luggage at the concierge, and proceed with some last minute shopping.

Note that availability of early check-in and late check-out at hotels often depends on occupancy and isn’t always guaranteed, not matter what the marketing website says.

Late check-outs depends on housekeeping logistics and occupancy rates.

Room Upgrades

Sofitel Damansara Opera Suite

Room upgrades start at the Gold level for most programs, except for IHG. Generally you get upgraded 1 or 2 tiers above the room type that you book. It is also possible to be upgraded to Suites (think First class in flights), depending on availability and your Elite level.

World of Hyatt Globalist may get upgrades up to standard suites

From Peter’s experience, room upgrades are sort of random. Occasionally, a bit of charm with the check-in counter lady can work wonders, as Peter has experienced firsthand with unexpected suite upgrades. Sometimes, he wonders if working on his charm might be more worthwhile than chasing status?

Guaranteed suite upgrades require Suite Upgrade Coupons, which are earned as milestone rewards. Accor members get 2x coupons upon reaching Platinum, and 1x suite night coupon for every 4000 Elite points earned subsequently (provided that you stay Platinum), while World of Hyatt elites get suite upgrade coupons for every 10 nights after 40 nights.

Lounge Access

Swisshotel Singapore Lounge

Lounge access can enhance your hotel stay experience with some snacks and drinks. At some hotels, breakfasts are served only at the lounge. It is provided to Platinum/Diamond members, except at IHG, where it’s tied to milestones after 40+ nights.

Is all of this worth it ?

If you are a casual traveller who travels 10 nights or less a year, hell no. It is simply not worth it to stay more at Hilton for 40 nights to attain Gold, only to get free breakfast as a guaranteed benefit. The cost of achieving the status far outweighs the benefits. You might as well just pay for the occasional breakfast. But if you travel fairly frequently (20 nights or more), achieving elite status can really enhance your travel experience, especially the room upgrades.

Here’s the open secret: Many people use fast track programs – such as status matches, credit card given status, or hotel subscriptions. Hilton for example, offers status match which requires only 8 nights to achieve gold and 14 nights for Diamond, which you can access here. Also, the Maybank Amex Platinum Charge card provides Hilton Gold and Marriott Gold memberships.

If you are new to the hotel game, don’t stay the default number of nights. Use fast track options if you can to achieve that Gold or Platinum status. Stay subscribed to our Telegram channel, and we will keep you informed of the fast track opportunities.

And hitting that Elite level is exciting, but keeping it? That’s where the grind kicks in. You’ll then need to rack up the required nights, spending the old fashion way, or continue paying for that subscription — great if you’re a frequent traveler or your company foots the bill. But if you’re doing mattress runs just to hold onto that shiny elite status, it’s probably not worth the cost.

Here’s another idea: You can keep your options open and stay independent. Don’t tie yourself down to one hotel chain. This way, you skip the hassle of chasing and maintaining Elite levels. If you really want to enjoy the Elite perks, you can also get it through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts program with Maybank’s Platinum Charge Card. Or just get the ‘free’ Elite programs such as Wyndham Diamond (World Mastercard) and GHA Discovery Titanium (Visa Infinite).

Conclusion

The way we see it, climbing up the hotel Elite status levels are completely optional, especially if you see hotels as just a place to sleep. If you are a casual traveller, independent hotels and Airbnbs can also offer you a great travel experience.

But if there is a fast track program and promotion for hotel status, we have no problem recommending it.

However, for frequent the travelers, perks like free breakfasts and room upgrades can add significant value and enhance the overall experience.

We hope this post gave you a clearer understanding of hotel programs and elite statuses. Stay tuned for more in-depth posts on each program!

See you on the next post.
