2025: A BolehMiles Reflection from Peter (Thanks for all the support)

Intro

Hello this is Peter, the founder of BolehMiles. I started BolehMiles in late 2024. It’s over a year old now, and I realised I never properly introduced myself on this blog.

I’m a Malaysian based in Singapore, I’ve been in the miles game for over 14 years, inspired a lot by The Milelion and One Mile at a Time. My motivation was simple: to help my family fly business class on long-haul trips so they arrive rested.

Some people assume I run BolehMiles full time. I don’t – I work full time in Singapore’s financial industry and joined a new company not long after I started BolehMiles. The role is very demanding, so I work on BolehMiles when time allows.

Why did I start BolehMiles?

Best Miles Credit Cards in Malaysia 2025

Many miles and points creators are aviation geeks. They know every aircraft type, seat map, and historical detail, and they turned that passion into content.

I don’t claim to be an AvGeek. But I’m good with numbers and finance. What draws me to finance isn’t investing, but arbitrage: finding mispricing and extracting value. That way of thinking has helped me a lot in the miles game.

It’s allowed me to fly business class often using miles and points, give my family comfortable long-haul travel, and help friends experience the joy of flying in comfort. It’s an incredibly liberating feeling, and that’s why I do this.

When I decided to start a blog, I realised Singapore didn’t need another miles site. The space is crowded, and Singapore Airlines/KrisFlyer content is covered to death. So I looked across the causeway.

Malaysia was quiet. No communities in sight, weak earn rates, and nothing particularly enticing to me.

I thought, “Why is no one covering miles and points in Malaysia?”. That gap became BolehMiles.

The state of the Malaysian Miles scene

I basically parachuted into the Malaysian miles scene, not knowing what I’d find on the ground.

I spent a lot of time researching, and honestly, it looked bleak. CIMB TWE had just been heavily nerfed. Maybank was tightening redemptions. Enrich had gone through multiple devaluations. There was no open, active community, only closed groups. On Lowyat, people were angry, cursing “gurus” for exposing lubangs for money. It felt grim.

But after I ran the numbers, the picture changed. Despite the devaluations, I find that the Malaysia miles game was still viable. So I wrote my first post: “How Viable Is the Malaysia Miles Game?”. It’s also a way for me to learn the Malaysian miles scene, and to document what I discover along the way.

I then started a Telegram channel to create a space for like-minded miles chasers. Thankfully, a group of experienced members found me, and from there, the community grew into what it is today.

Blessings

I was grateful for the help and support I received from established players in the space.

I reached out to Aaron (The Milelion) and asked if he had any tips. I was hoping for some secret SEO hacks to grow readership. Instead, he told me to focus on writing useful, honest content. If it helps people, growth takes care of itself.

That became my focus in 2025. I spent my energy building foundational content for Malaysia, including a comparison of Singapore versus Malaysia miles cards. He took an interest in the piece and shared it in his Milelion Telegram group, which I’m thankful for.

Alex, Kelvin and the Every (IIMMPACT) team also provided early support, and we ran campaigns to help community to earn miles on big-ticket expenses, much like CardUp in Singapore.

Joe and the HeyMax team helped inject energy into the Malaysia miles scene at a time when earn rates looked bleak. I’m also grateful to the wider community, including Uncle Chong from the Marriott Review group, the Malaysia Airlines FB groups and travel influencer Cobi. Not to mention, the active members of the BolehMiles Telegram community!

Gathering

We held our first BolehMiles gathering this year during the opening weekend of Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur. Since it was our first event, I kept it small. Park Hyatt generously gave us the entire Library area of Park Lounge for the gathering, complete with a harpist.

Meeting community members in person is completely different from online interactions. Touring a new hotel together and putting faces to names was such an enjoyable experience. And some members who are quiet online turned out to be incredibly active in person!

Organising the event was logistically challenging, but it was absolutely worth it. And I do plan to host simpler gatherings in 2026.

Challenges

The biggest challenge for me is time. Each post takes a long time to produce, usually at least 5 – 10 hours across research, writing, editing, and creating the HTML tables. Most of this gets done during spare time – late nights and early mornings.

Managing the BolehMiles Telegram community is another challenge. Scammers inevitably find their way in, and I’m still working out the best way to deal with them effectively.

There are also very different schools of thought within the community, from miles buying to miles valuation, and even the idea that making money from content creation is somehow a sin. I’ll address that properly in a separate post.

Interesting messages I received

Since we’re doing reflections, I thought I’d share some interesting messages I received. Some were half-serious, some asked for an ebook even after I said it was a joke, and some mocked the posts for “bringing no value.” All of them left an impression on me.

Looking Ahead in 2026

So far, I’ve focused on building foundational content, credit card reviews and guides, which are longer and more time-consuming. Now that the site is more established, I plan to publish shorter, more frequent posts.

On the partnership side, I hope to bring more campaigns that benefit the miles community through existing BolehMiles partners, and to build new ones with other players in the space. If you are a business with a proposal, feel free to contact me directly.

Thank you

Thank you for being part of BolehMiles and for the support along the way, especially those who stood by me when it mattered.

Here’s to a better miles and points scene for Malaysia in 2026. And I do hope you do more meaningful and comfortable trips with your loved ones.

Happy New Year.
